DATE:  July 26, 2008

SUBJECT: Structure Fire 41W300 Silver Glen Road

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 8:14 this evening, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to 41W300 Silver Glen Road, in unincorporated Campton Township, for a report of a house that was filling up with smoke and a possible basement fire. Campton Hills Police arrived on the scene prior to fire units and confirmed a basement fire. Firefighters arrived at 8:23 and encountered a two-story house with moderate smoke in the basement and on the first floor. A small fire was located in the basement and firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. The occupants were at home at the time of the fire but were able to exit safely and turn in the alarm via a cell phone. There were no injuries. The home is habitable and loss is estimated at $15,000. Fire department investigators have confirmed the cause of the fire as a heat lamp to close to combustibles. The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva, Batavia, and Elburn Fire Departments.

SUBJECT: Structure Fire 2445 Production Drive

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 09:06 this morning, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to The Sun Chemical manufacturing facility, at 2445 Production Drive, for an activated fire alarm. While in route responding companies were notified that an employee was reporting smoke in the southeast warehouse. Firefighters arrived at 09:09 and confirmed a fire in the high rack storage units in the warehouse. The installed sprinkler system was operating and was keeping the fire in check. Firefighters applied additional hose streams to the fire to effect complete extinguishment. All employees were able to exit the building safely. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and has been released. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and loss is estimated at $50,000. All fire apparatus had cleared the scene by 11:04. The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva, Batavia and Elburn Fire Departments.

SUBJECT: Structure Fire 39W815 Buckskin Court

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 8:57 this evening, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to 39W815 Buckskin Court, in unincorporated Campton Township, for a report of a house that had been struck by lightening and was now on fire. Firefighters arrived at 9:05 and encountered a two-story house with visible fire on the second floor. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes and contain it to a second floor bedroom and closet. The occupants were at home at the time of the fire but were able to exit safely with their pets. There were no injuries. The home is not habitable and loss is estimated at $75,000 to the structure and $25,000 to the contents. Fire department investigators have confirmed the cause of the fire as a lightening strike. The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva, Batavia, Elburn and South Elgin Fire Departments.

SUBJECT: Tanker Truck Roll-Over Route 38 West of Peck Road

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 11:53 this morning, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to State Route 38 just west of Peck road for a report of a roll-over accident with injuries, involving a fuel tanker truck, and the truck was leaking fuel. Upon arrival, personnel found that the driver of the truck was out of the vehicle. He was treated on the scene and transported to Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva with non-life threatening injuries by Fire Department Paramedics. Fuel was found to be actively leaking from several damaged compartments on the vehicle. Fire personnel applied foam concentrate to the truck, and the surrounding area in order to prevent a fire, and worked further to contain the leaking gasoline and diesel fuel. Approximately 1000 gallons of fuel leaked during the incident. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency was notified per standard procedure and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency responded to the scene. The remaining fuel was pumped of the damaged truck and it was up-righted and removed from the side of the road. No Fire firefighters were injured during the incident and crews were on the scene for approximately six and one half hours. Environmental clean-up crews are already on the scene and remediation work will begin immediately.

SUBJECT: Structure Fire 417 37th Avenue, Smurfit Stone Container

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 12:03 AM this morning, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to 417 37th Avenue, Smurfit Stone Container, for a report of a fire in the building. Firefighters arrived at 12:06 and found heavy dark smoke coming from the south side of the building. Upon entering, firefighters found a large quantity of flame and smoke in materials stored for recycling. The building sprinkler system was activated and supported by numerous hoselines fed by fire apparatus. The fire escalated to a second level MABAS box alarm due to the extent of fire and need for substantial manpower. It took several hours to contain the fire and at the time of the writing of this release, firefighters remained on the scene conducting overhaul and investigation. Damage has been estimated to be $250,000 to structure and contents. All occupants had evacuated the building prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. St. Charles was assisted in their efforts by eleven neighboring fire departments.

SUBJECT: Structure Fire 1405 Dean Street

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 9:02 this evening, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to 1405 Dean Street for a report of a fire in the rear of the building. Firefighters arrived at 9:05 and found a fire in the basement of a townhome unit that had burned through an exterior wall. The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes but firefighters remained on the scene conducting the cause and origin investigation as of the writing of this release. A neighbor discovered the fire and called 911. No one was at home at the time of the fire and none of the occupants were injured. One firefighter was examined on the scene by paramedics but was not transported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but is not considered suspicious. Loss is estimated at $5000 and the home is not habitable.

SUBJECT: Structure Fire Applied Composites 333 N. 6th Street

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 3:04 this afternoon, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to 333 N. 6th Street, the property previously occupied by the Applied Composites Corporation, for a report of a heavy black smoke coming from the structure. Firefighters arrived at 3:07 and found an abandon vehicle burning inside of the building. Firefighters extinguished the fire in approximately 20 minutes but remained on the scene as of the writing of this release. The property is unoccupied and there were no injuries. The fire was discovered by a passerby who also phoned 911. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and is considered suspicious. No loss is set at this time. The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva, Batavia and Elburn Fire Departments.

SUBJECT: Structure Fire, Sun Chemical, 2445 Production Drive

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 11:03 this evening, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to The Sun Chemical manufacturing facility, at 2445 Production Drive, for a report of a fire in the warehouse.  Firefighters arrived at 11:07 and confirmed a fire in the high rack storage units in the warehouse.  The installed sprinkler system was operating and was applying a foam concentrate to the fire, keeping it in check.  Firefighters applied additional hose streams to the fire to effect complete extinguishment.  The MABAS Division 13 Hazardous Materials Team responded to assist with product identification.  The fire was discovered by an employee who also turned in the alarm.   All employees were able to exit the building safely and there were no injuries.  The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and loss is estimated at $200,000.  The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva, Batavia and Elburn Fire Departments as well as the MABAS Division 13 Hazardous Materials Team.

SUBJECT: Structure Fire 38W594 Hilltop

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 4:24 this morning, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to 38W594 Hilltop Drive, in unincorporated St. Charles Township, for a reported house fire.  Firefighters arrived at 4:29 and encountered a house that was well involved in fire.  As there were no fire hydrants in the subdivision, firefighters established a water supply from a fire hydrant in a near-by subdivision that was within the City of St. Charles.  The fire was brought under control in approximately 1 hour but firefighters remain on the scene as of the writing of this release.  None of the occupants were at home at the time of the fire.  One firefighter was transported to Delnor Hospital for evaluation.  The home is not habitable and loss is estimated at $500,000 to the structure and $250,000 to the contents, which includes a large pleasure boat.  Fire department investigators are working on determining the cause of the fire.  Further information on cause will be released when the information is available.  The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva, Batavia, Elburn and West Chicago Fire Departments.

SUBJECT: Structure Fire - 207 Walnut Avenue

RELEASE:  Immediate Release

At 1:12 this afternoon, the St. Charles Fire Department responded to 207 Walnut Avenue for a report from a passerby of black smoke coming from the building.  Firefighters arrived at 1:14 and encountered a fire in the basement that had extended to the first floor.  The fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes, but firefighters remained on the scene until 4:24 checking for fire extension and conducting the cause and origin investigation.  None of the occupants were at home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. The home is not habitable and loss is estimated at $200,000 to the structure and $50,000 to the contents.  Fire department investigators have determined that the cause of the fire is attributed to combustibles to close to a heat source.  The occupants are working with the Red Cross for the arrangement of immediate needs.  The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by the Geneva and Batavia Fire Departments.
