McGruff HouseThe St. Charles Police Department recruits St. Charles residents to become McGruff House volunteers who can make emergency phone calls for children in trouble and watch out for children as they go to and from school. A McGruff House is a safe house for children to go to when they find themselves in emergencies or frightening situations, such as being bullied, followed or hurt. The McGruff Houses are marked with signs having the familiar McGruff Crime Fighting Dog dressed in a trench coat. Volunteers can be any resident 18 or older who will complete, sign and return an application, which includes permission for a law enforcement background check. All applicants are screened, and those who do not pass the background check are not accepted into the program. (Please note that minor traffic violations do not disqualify applicants.) Applications are available at the St. Charles Police Department (630-377-4435) or download one here (PDF - 24k).
