Overweight Truck Enforcement

The St. Charles Police Department has had an overweight truck enforcement program since 1991, with the first set of scales for the weighing of trucks purchased in 1994. In 1998 the Department started a program of truck safety inspections on a local level and has worked in conjunction with the Illinois State Police in an effort to improve the safety of large trucks, which in turn improves the safety on our streets and highways.

The weight enforcement program is geared toward the identification of those vehicles exceeding the weight set by state statute. These vehicles not only do a great deal of damage to our roadways but are also a safety hazard to the motoring public. Being overweight puts undue stress on the vehicle that contributes to early failure of such items as brakes and steering/suspension components. This in turn leads to failures that could cause a serious crash.

The Department also works with companies that require special operating permits due to the size of the equipment needed for a given project. This includes routing and traffic control when necessary. Members of the Department are also available to answer questions regarding these issues, as well as any others concerning commercial vehicles.
