The following conclusions have been gleaned from this data:
  • Crashes at our primary intersections have decreased again, for the fourth year in a row. The intersections of 2nd Street and West Main; Randall Road and West Main; and Randall Road and Lincoln Highway that have shared the top positions for years have experienced a major decline causing the ranking for our intersections to change dramatically. In order to have a “Top Ten” ranking, intersections with as few as four crashes had to be considered, whereas in the past, ten or more were needed to even qualify.
  • With the exception noted above, Randall Road intersections and roadway stretches have seen an increase in accident numbers as predicted last year. The Randall Road corridor was slated to be a primary target of IDOT speed grant activity until reduced federal funding forced IDOT to discontinue speed grants in 2010. Randall Road is fast becoming the Main Street of Kane County, with traffic volumes and accident rates approaching that of Illinois Route 64.
  • East Main Street continues to dominate our “Top Ten” list, with six of ten locations. For more than a decade our accident crash data, IDOT’s traffic volume data, and our demonstrated selective enforcement activity highlights the need for roadway engineering changes.
  • In conclusion, East Main Street will continue to suffer from a high number of crashes until the roadway can be re-engineered. Speed enforcement will be a priority from the 900 block east to Kirk Rd to help mitigate this problem. Attention to Randall Road during selective enforcement activities will be necessary in 2010.
