New Commercial/Industrial Electric Service Commercial Electric service to a commercial building usually involves all underground construction. The general policy is for the customer to be responsible for installing the conduit system, both primary and secondary, the service cables, and the transformer concrete pad and grounding. The city’s Electric Division will supply the customer’s contractor with the appropriate specifications for installing the transformer pad, grounding and primary conduit. The city electric Operating Office will dispatch a crew to install the primary cabling, the transformer and the primary and secondary terminations. All meters are located on the outside of the building to facilitate meter reading. Electric loads requiring a panel board rating of 800 amps or greater require a shunt trip circuit to enable the City Fire Department to quickly de-energize the service in case of emergency.
The application form to the right may be submitted to the Electric Division to generate the appropriate engineering review and eventual charges for the engineering and construction work. The customer will also be required to sign a reconciliation agreement, which states that at the completion of the City’s electrical work, if the City’s estimate of time and materials was too high, we will refund to the customer the difference. If our original estimate was too low, we will require the customer to make up the difference. Every effort will be made to come as close to the expected costs as possible.
