Arbor Day Celebration in St. Charles

He that plants trees loves others beside himself.

Dr. Thomas Fuller, Gnomologia, 1732
British physician (1654 – 1734)

The City Tree Commission hosts an annual Arbor Day program at Lincoln Park on Arbor Day, Friday, April 25, 2008, at 4 p.m. Join us as we dedicate the 2008 commemorative tree (a Black Tupelo), enjoy musical entertainment, light refreshments and participate in the drawing to win a young tree suitable for planting in your yard. In addition, the winner of the tree story contest will be announced at this event.

New this year is ASK AN ARBORIST - certified arborists and will be available to advise on tree care and answer your tree-related questions, and tree care equipment will be on display. All guests will receive a gift of a perennial plant (courtesy of Midwest Groundcovers). Lincoln Park is located on the north side of Main Street between 4th and 5th streets.

St. Charles proudly sponsors this annual observance as a certified Tree City. St. Charles has been named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry.  It is the tenth year St. Charles has received this national recognition. St. Charles is also the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program.  St. Charles has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.

This spring, in honor of Arbor Day, the City of St. Charles will be planting 100 trees throughout the community, including the 1st Street Renovation project downtown.

The first Arbor Day was held in 1872 after J. Sterling Morton, father of Morton Arboretum founder Joy Morton, proposed an annual holiday to plant trees on the windswept plains of Nebraska. Arbor Day is now celebrated in all fifty states and in many other countries around the world.
