A home rule tax of .25% existed in 1997, with an additional .25% added in 1998, bringing the total St. Charles sales tax to 7.0% applied to general merchandise. Qualifying foods, drugs and medical appliances are only taxed at 1.25%. Titled/registered vehicles are only taxed at 6.5%. These figures above represent Municipal tax (1% of all sales) plus applicable home rule tax.
~
Reduction in sales revenue in 2001 due to closure of JC Penney while remodeling for Von Maur and closure of Montgomery Wards.
**
After Hines Lumber sales tax was diverted to Buffalo Grove, and Siegle Lumber sales were diverted to Hampshire, the State adjusted for receipts already paid to the City of St. Charles, hence the revenue decline from previous years.
