At designated consolidated election periods, the City of St. Charles, in conjunction with the Kane County Clerk’s Office, compile nominating petition packets that any interested resident can pick up if considering to run for the following City elected offices: Mayor, City Clerk, City Treasurer and Ward Alderman.  The packet includes all of the filing requirements information, forms and schedule.  The City elections are also of a non-partisan basis. The City has two aldermen per ward so Aldermanic races are staggered to run every two years for a 4-year term with the Mayoral, City Clerk and Treasurer race running every four years.  All candidate papers need to be filed at the City Clerk’s Office (2 East Main Street) by the end of the business day of the designated deadline.

It is strongly advised that a candidate obtain legal counsel regarding their legal qualification for office, the proper method for completing the petition forms with respect to the office, the minimum and maximum number of signatures required, the qualification of the signers and circulators, etc.

If on the first day of filing there is more than one person in line to file for a designated office, petitions will be received simultaneously and later there will be a lottery for simultaneous filings to break any tie for ballot positioning.

The City also offers other services for voter’s registration and absentee voting in the Utility Billing and Collections Office at the Municipal Building.  One can find more information at the Kane County Election Office website:  http://www.kanecountyelections.org or call 630 232 5990.
