Parkways and Mailbox Repairs

Maintenance of the City right-of-way/parkway is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. The one exception to this is the maintenance of the parkway trees. Only City crews can trim or remove these trees. If you do have problems or questions regarding the trees on your parkway, please call the Street Division at (630) 377-4459.

Sprinkler Systems and Invisible Dog Fence
Sprinkler systems and invisible dog fences should be installed on the home/business owner’s property, not on the City right-of-way/parkway, which usually extends 1’ beyond the interior edge of the sidewalk. The City is not responsible for repairs to or replacement of lines installed on City property that are disturbed or damaged during construction and maintenance of curb, parkway or sidewalk. It is the property owner’s responsibility to repair or replace these lines. The installation of a lawn sprinkler system requires a permit available through the Building and Zoning Department (link to B&Z permits).

Plant/Landscaping Material
Plant and landscaping materials, including flowers and shrubs, installed by the property owner on City parkways will not be replaced in the event that it is disturbed or damaged during construction and maintenance of curb, parkway or sidewalk. It is the property owner’s responsibility to repair or replace this plant/landscaping material. The City will replace grass that has been disturbed during the construction project.

Mailbox Repairs
Section 12.04.218 of Title 12 in the City Code set the parameters for standard mailbox installation and includes a diagram of acceptable scenarios. The City does repair or replace mailboxes that are hit by City snow plows during snow clearing operations. The determination of repairs or replacements are made on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the Public Works office at (630) 377-4405 or by email at psuhr@stcharlesil.gov with questions about the repair or replacement of mailboxes.
