Geographic Information Systems Division

The City created the GIS division in 2004 to manage geographic information and operate as a centralized unit in the Information Systems Department. This governance model enables a uniform implementation of GIS services and applications. The benefits gained include coordinated data acquisition/maintenance efforts, focused training and employee development, deployment of applications that serve multiple needs, and clear oversight of operational expenses.

The goal of the GIS division is to broaden perception and incorporate a geographic perspective into existing workflows and business practices. Through the use of GIS technologies we strive to:

  • Improve citizens' access to government
  • Effectively manage assets and resources
  • Comply with State and Federal mandates
  • Ensure quality and effective decision making
  • Improve data accuracy
  • Automate workflows, improve production, and increase efficiency

The GIS division provides information, analysis, and mapping services to other City departments. Also, we serve as data stewards managing the geographic component of City infrastructure and enabling each business unit to maintain detailed information through the use of custom applications. We disseminate geographic information with enterprise GIS server based applications allowing us to put GIS on every desktop in the City at a minimal cost.
