The City is collecting children’s books during the month of August for Bernie’s Book Bank. Collection boxes are located at city hall in the reception area and at the police department front desk. New and gently used children’s books for ages from birth through 6th grade are welcome (please no workbooks, textbooks, coloring books, reference books, or teacher’s guides).
Bernie’s Book Bank volunteers sort the donated books by age and then distribute them to over 333,000 local at-risk children. Each child receives 12 books a year for 12 years. Their distribution partners include schools in which 50% or more of the children are in the free and reduced lunch program. Schools and social service organizations that distribute their books are located in Wasco, St. Charles, West Chicago, Elgin, Carpentersville, and many other downtown and suburban locations.
Help us meet our goal of 1,500 books! Visit http://berniesbookbank.org for more information on Bernie’s Book Bank or call the Human Resources office at 630-377-4446 with questions about our August book drive. If you do not have books to donate, donations of funds are welcome and will be used to purchase books. Donate online at https://cloud4good.tfaforms.net/384836 (type in “St Charles” as the book drive name) or leave cash or check donations with the City receptionist.
