Construction

Site preparation has begun in anticipation of Nicor relocating their gas line.  

Underground utility work at the intersection of S 1st Street and Walnut Street at the entrance to the parking garage was completed as planned late last week and the entrance was opened prior to Friday afternoon with a temporary riding surface installed.  This surface will remain in place until concrete paving work begins later in the project plan.  Thank you for your patience while traveling in this area. 

This week work will continue on the retaining walls for the new river walk ramp with installation of conduits for future amenities and underground utilities for the future plaza space.  Aggregate backfill of the walls, stairs and seat walls poured last week will continue and work on the trellis foundations is anticipated to begin in the next week. 

Things are starting to really come together on the walls for the new ramp up to the plaza from the river walk.  Several of the footings and walls have been poured and backfilled and work is continuing on the next footings and walls to the north that will transition to the new plaza space.  Utility work is conti

East Side Streets

Work on the ramp from the Riverwalk to the new plaza has continued with the installation of footings to support the new walking surface and utility work for drainage of the site.  Utility work will continue this week and the walls to support the new trellis and walking surface will also be formed this week.  Foundations for the trellis structure and more underground work will continue next week and we look forward to seeing things rising out of the ground on the site soon.         

More good weather for construction has allowed for forward progress on the demolition of the existing switchback ramps near the Riverwalk and placement of aggregate base for the new ramp is in progress.  Underground utility work is up next and will continue for the next few weeks in conjunction with the beginning of foundations for site improvements such as the steel trellis structure and associated underground infrastructure.

East Side Streets

Mother nature has given the gift of very good construction weather and this week lots of progress was made toward completing the demolition portion of the project.  Removal of the walls and ramps to the river walk is in progress and crews have completed a substantial portion of the demolition work which means it’s almost time to start building!   Keep checking for updates as we are anticipating starting on building foundations to support the new plaza features in the near future. 

Demolition of the existing South 1st Street concrete paving is complete!  Removal of the concrete paving, sidewalks, planter boxes and other items from Main Street to Walnut Street has been completed and crews are moving on to sidewalks, bricks and planters on the east side of the road with plans to start the demolition process on the existing river walk ramp next.  A reminder that this area is a construction zone and not open to the public.  However, please enjoy the process and views from behind the construction fence and keep up with our progress toward this exciting new feature in the h
