What are boards and commissions? Boards and commissions are groups of residents appointed by the Mayor to advise City Council on specific issues. Members serve as unpaid volunteers who choose to support the community through public service.
- Commissions: Research, recommend, and support policy in a particular area. There are 8 commissions.
How do you become a commission or board member? Interested candidates may apply, after which the Mayor recommends qualified individuals to fill board and commission vacancies. All appointments are approved by the City Council.
What are the member responsibilities? Board and commission members provide recommendations that assist the City Council in making decisions. They also serve as ambassadors to the community, informing and educating the public about the purpose of the board/commission and activities of the City. Members review items and issues at the request of the City Council or of interest to the public and attending all meetings.
What are the requirements to serve? Being a St. Charles resident is required to serve, though exceptions may be made for certain vacant seats based on need or expertise.
What is a commission liaison? The Mayor may appoint a liaison to represent the City Council and serve as a communication link to a commission. The liaison advises and provides support, in addition to any other defined duties.
