The St. Charles Fire Department has achieved an ISO Class 1 rating from the Insurance Service Office (ISO). Protection classes are graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with a Class 1 being the best rating possible. St. Charles is honored to continue with our rating as an ISO Class 1 fire department. At the time of the rating, this placed St. Charles in the top 27 out of 1,772 fire departments in Illinois, or the top 1.5%. Nationwide, St. Charles is one of only 411 fire departments in the United States to achieve ISO Class 1, placing it in the top 1% of the 39,200 fire departments in the country. The ISO Class 1 rating is only achieved through the combined efforts and cooperation of Tri-Com Central Dispatch, the Public Works Water Division, and the St. Charles Fire Department.
The St. Charles Fire Department is an Accredited Agency with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) for meeting the criteria established through the CFAI's voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program. The St. Charles Fire Department is one of only 320 agencies to achieve Internationally Accredited Agency status with the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE). The Department was first accredited in 2013. CFAI is dedicated to assisting fire and emergency service agencies throughout the world achieve excellence through self-assessment and accreditation to continually improve and enhance services to their communities. The CFAI process is voluntary, and provides an agency with an improvement model to assess its service delivery and performance internally. The agency then works with a team of peers from other agencies to evaluate its completed self-assessment. The achievement of Accredited Agency status demonstrates that our Fire Department is not only high-performing and comprised of dedicated professionals, but also has constructed a plan for continuous improvement and transparent results.
