Safely Use Lithium-ion Batteries: 3 Key Steps

  1. Buy Only Certified Products - When purchasing products with lithium-ion batteries, look for safety certification marks such as UL, ETL, or CSA. These indicate the product meets key safety standards.
  2. Charge Devices Safely - Always use the charger and cord provided by the manufacturer. Follow all instructions. Only purchase replacement chargers from the manufacturer or approved vendors. Charge devices on hard surfaces, avoid overcharging, and unplug when fully charged.
  3. Recycle Batteries Responsibly - Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins, as they can cause fires. Instead, recycle them at certified battery recycling locations. Visit call2recycle.org to find a nearby drop-off site.

Support the 2025 Fire Prevention Week Campaign

The St. Charles Fire Department urges all residents to take part in this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign. It is a great reminder to practice safety when using lithium-ion batteries — and to take action.

In addition to the Open House, the Department will conduct school visits to share fire safety education with students throughout the community.
