Prescription Medication and Sharps Disposal

Prescription Medication Disposal Program

Lobby-2.jpg The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) encourages residents to use drug take-back programs. Flushing prescription medications or pouring them down the sink can create the potential for harmful chemicals to end up in waterways and drinking water. The St. Charles Police Department offers residents a safe and environmentally protective way to dispose of unwanted, expired or unused prescription medication.

Residents are asked to remove the prescription medication from its original packaging and place it in a clear sealed plastic bag.

Residents can bring the bagged medication to the St. Charles Police Department Front Desk at 1515 W. Main Street.

Residents who do not bag their medication prior to coming to the police department will be provided with a bag for disposal. Residents will be asked to transfer the medication from the original containers to the bag. Police Department staff members will not handle any medication. Once all medication is placed in the sealed bag, the bag can be placed in the disposal bin located in the police department lobby.

The disposal bin is for prescription medications only. Liquids, over-the-counter items, inhalers, or any pressurized containers are not accepted. The St. Charles Police disposal program will not accept medication from any entity authorized to dispense prescription drugs, including but not limited to, pharmacies and medical offices.

Sharps Disposal Program

The St. Charles Police department offers residents a safe and convenient way to dispose of used or unused medical needles and syringes. A secure sharps disposal box is located in the lobby of the police department. Sharps materials must be placed in the disposal box by the resident. Police Department staff will not handle any sharps materials.

The police department also provides quart sized sharps containers free of charge to residents.
