Marriage Licenses and Vital Records (Birth/Death Certificates)
City Service Status:
The City of St. Charles does not issue marriage licenses or birth/death certificates. These vital records are not provided by City Hall.
Provided By:
Kane County Clerk’s Office – the county clerk handles vital records for Kane County portions of St. Charles.
DuPage County Clerk’s Office– the county clerk handles vital records for DuPage County portions of St. Charles.
Description:
The Kane County Clerk’s Office and the DuPage County Clerk's Office are the official source for vital records, which include marriage licenses, marriage certificates, birth certificates, and death certificates in the respective counties.
Marriage Licenses: Couples who plan to marry in St. Charles (or anywhere in Kane or DuPage Counties) must obtain a marriage license from either the Kane County Clerk or the DuPage Count Clerk before the wedding. The license is valid only within the county from which it was obtained, becomes effective one day after issuance, and expires after 60 days. You and your future spouse must appear together at a County Clerk’s office location to apply for the license, present valid ID, and pay the required fee.
Birth & Death Certificates: The County Clerk maintains all official birth and death records for people born or deceased in the county. Certified copies of birth and death certificates can be requested from the Clerk’s Vital Records division in person, by mail, or online (through an authorized service). The County Clerk verifies eligibility (to protect privacy) and then issues the certified document for a fee.
Important: If the birth or death occurred outside of Kane or DuPage County (or a marriage took place outside these counties), you must contact the appropriate county or state office; the Kane and DuPage County Clerks only handles local vital events.
For all these services – applying for a marriage license, or obtaining copies of birth/death certificates – residents should contact the County Clerk’s Office, not the City. The County Clerk can also assist with civil union licenses, genealogy records, and other official documents related to vital records.
