The St. Charles Fire Department utilizes the KnoxBox Rapid Entry System, a secure emergency access program for property owners and first responders. Property owners store entrance keys and/or access cards in the high-security key boxes that are mounted near designated building entry points. During an emergency response, immediate access to those keys/cards prevents forced entry damage or delay while responders wait for a key holder to arrive. KnoxBox Rapid Entry System products can only be opened by the Fire Department’s exclusive key for the safety of the property owner.
Buildings Requiring a Knox Box
The St Charles Fire Prevention Bureau requires that a Knox Box be installed on all buildings having an automatic fire alarm or fire suppression system that is supervised by a listed supervising agency and/or in buildings that contain a passenger elevator. The box should be located at the front entrance or as determined by the Fire Code Official and be installed no more than 5 feet above the finished ground.
