We have received numerous inquiries from the St. Charles community about reports of federal immigration operations in the Chicago area. First and foremost, the safety and security of our residents is our top priority. We are committed to working together with residents, community groups, and partners to ensure that everyone feels safe, supported, and heard in St. Charles.

St. Charles Police Department Policy

The St. Charles Police Department fully complies with the Illinois TRUST Act, which limits cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, and prohibits local police from detaining individuals based on immigration holds or ICE detainers without a judicial warrant, aiming to protect immigrant communities and uphold due process.

  • Our officers do not conduct immigration-related investigations.
  • Our officers do not participate in immigration-related arrests.
  • The Police Department does not receive advance notice of federal immigration operations.
  • We remain focused on protecting all residents and providing services equally to everyone, regardless of immigration status.

Key TRUST Act Immigration-Related Facts:

  • The Act prevents local officers from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status during routine interactions, such as traffic stops.
  • No person will be denied police services or any other benefit based on their immigration status.
  • The local police will not stop, search, or arrest any person on their perceived immigration status.
  • No witness, victim or other person reporting a crime will be questioned regarding their immigration status.
  • The police will not proactively notify ICE of the arrest of an undocumented person absent a federal criminal warrant or a federal judicial determination of probable cause.
