Vacation Watch Request

The St. Charles Police Department is pleased to be able to provide the service of checking your residence while you are away on vacation. A vacation watch alerts your area beat officer you will be on vacation during the specified time period. The officers will perform extra patrols at the residence when time permits, checking the exterior only of your property. The timing or frequency of these checks are dependent on the officer’s call volume and other assignments. Should an incident occur at your location while you are away, the vacation watch registration provides our officers with a method to contact you or a representative of your choice.

Your request will be prioritized based on the availability of our resources and volume of requests received.

Step 1.Gather required information

  • Names and phone numbers for persons entering the home to care for pets, plants, etc.
  • Names and phone numbers for local persons holding keys to the home.
  • Name and phone number for an emergency contact.
  • Information regarding pets in the home.
  • Information about vehicles left outside, including license plate information.

Step 2.Alert a trusted neighbor you will be away from the residence.

Ask a neighbor to watch your home and contact police if there is any suspicious activity. Advise them you have registered for a vacation watch and officers will be checking the residence periodically.

Step 3.Plan for your property to appear lived-in. 

  • Add timers to your lighting. The police department will loan residents two light timers.  Timers can be picked up at the front desk of the St Charles Police Department.
  • Arrange for your lawn to be cut, snow to be shoveled, and mail, newspapers, and packages to be brought inside.
  • Do not post your vacation plans on social media.

Step 4.Complete and submit your vacation watch request form below

The St. Charles Police Department actively participates in the vacation watch program.  If you and all members of your household will be on vacation and you are able to adhere to all conditions of this program, please complete this online form. Please do not complete this form if you will have a house-sitter or someone frequenting your home in your absence.
