Service Alert
Winter Electric Safety
  • Snow, ice, and high winds can cause power outages and downed power lines.
  • Report power outages or downed power lines immediately by calling 866-444-0016.
  • Never approach a downed power line. Always assume it is energized and extremely dangerous.
  • Stay clear of City crews working on or near live electrical equipment. These work zones can be hazardous.

During cold weather:

  • Adjust your thermostat wisely. Set it at the lowest comfortable temperature. Lower it when you are away or sleeping and raise it when you return home or wake up.
  • Use sunlight for natural warmth. Open south-facing window shades during sunny days and close them at night to reduce heat loss.
  • Seal air leaks. Weatherstrip doors and windows and seal cracks with caulk or foam to reduce heat loss and lower energy costs.
  • Keep vents clear. Ensure furniture and rugs are not blocking heating vents to allow proper airflow.
  • Change or clean air filters regularly. Dirty filters restrict airflow, increase energy use, and raise utility costs.

Winter Water Tips

As temperatures drop, the risk of frozen pipes increases. To help prevent frozen pipes:

  • Insulate exposed pipes, especially in unheated areas such as garages.
  • Keep your thermostat set at 55°F or higher at all times.
  • Allow a small trickle of cold water to run from faucets.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow warm air to circulate.
  • Seal drafts around windows and doors.
  • Disconnect and drain all outdoor hoses before winter.

If your pipes freeze, contact a licensed plumber immediately.
