The City of St. Charles seeks full-time college students for summer work in laborer positions in several of our public works divisions.  These laborer positions will primarily work outside performing such duties as painting, mowing, shoveling dirt, landscaping, washing floors, and general clean-up duties.  The summer laborer positions may utilize hand and small power tools to accomplish tasks.  These positions are assigned to work on crews and will interact with city staff on a regular basis, so effective communication skills are required.

This part-time and paid-for-response position works a minimum of 6 hours a month for the attendance of twice monthly meetings and training.  Additional hours available at the discretion of the EMA Coordinator or as needed depending on special events and weather. This position will assist in the mitigation and preparedness functions related to natural, environmental, man-made or other emergencies.  This position is responsible for the delivery of City services to community special events and for maintaining and activating the Emergency Operations Center.

This position is primarily responsible for coordinating economic development functions for the City of St. Charles. Reporting to the Director of Community & Economic Development, the primary emphasis of this position is to contribute to the economic vitality of the City through implementation and administration of programs, projects, initiatives, and economic incentives to support development efforts, attract new businesses and encourage expansion and retention of existing businesses. The position requires exercise of professional judgment and initiative within the framework of established regulations and policies.
This position is responsible for performing a variety of manual, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City owned property and its services. These vacancies will be assigned to the Forestry team and perform tree trimming and landscape duties, repair curbing and sidewalks, and maintain, inspect, and repair the storm sewer collection system.  Will also perform set up and clean-up of special events and handle miscellaneous custodial duties and carpentry work.  Laborers operate a wide variety of equipment, including, but not limited to, backhoe, end loader, jackhammer, bobcat, chippers, and compressors.  In addition, laborers respond to emergency situations, such as snow removal, sanitary sewer backups, flooding from rain events, emergency utility locations, signs down etc. and support other City departments/divisions in the abatement of emergency situations.  This position may be asked to become an Equipment Operator, Maintenance Technician, Sign Technician, Crew Leader or Welder when the need arises.
