Students Explore First Responder Careers

A virtual first responder career event recently was held for St. Charles North and East high school students, in cooperation with the school district’s Department of College and Career Readiness.

Fire Lieutenant Cliff Lo, Firefighter/Paramedic Megan Funk, and Firefighter/Paramedic Steve Rehak from the St. Charles Fire Department participated, along with Andrew Kunstler, training coordinator at Tri-Com Central Dispatch, and Denice Brogan from Human Resources. The staff members talked about their careers, training and education, specialties within the profession (dive team, HAZMAT, etc.), why they like their chosen profession, and more. Seven students attended the event, asked some excellent questions, and showed interest in following a first responder career path.

This was the City’s first virtual career event for high school students, and we were very happy with how it went. We hope to continue working with the school district to schedule other virtual career events throughout the school year and encourage anyone interested in municipal careers to visit the city website, Human Resources Department, for more information and resources.
