Parking Spots Designated for Ride Share Vehicles

The City of St. Charles recently passed an ordinance which increased the number of parking spaces dedicated specifically for ride share vehicles working around the busy downtown district on the weekends. Three parking spaces along the 0-99 block of North 3rd Street as well as two designated spaces on the southeast corner of North 3rd Street and Cedar Street are reserved for rideshare operators actively working Thursday through Saturday nights, from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. New signage outlines the parking restrictions.

“DUI enforcement is a top priority for our Department and the City. Our goal is to keep all intoxicated motorists off the roads. We fully support using designated drivers or ride share services and taxis as a means of getting everyone home safely,” said St. Charles police Commander Rich Clark.

In 2018, there were 10,511 deaths in the United States as a result of drunk driving. This was a 3.6 percent decrease from 2017.  It is believed that the increase in rideshare and taxi use has aided in the resulting lower fatality rate.
