The purpose of building codes is to see that the buildings we live and work in are reasonably safe from fire, safety and health hazards and that they provide adequate light, air, and basic facilities such as sanitation and heat. Codes also provide for equal accessibility for disabled persons.
Several private nonprofit organizations publish model codes that are adopted by cities, towns and counties throughout the United States. St. Charles has adopted some of these codes, with amendments that tailor them to the needs of our community.
