Open Space - Community Development

The City of St. Charles encourages development to conserve open space and provide a sustainable environment within the City. This is also an important part of the City of St. Charles’ 2014 Strategic Plan Vision and Principles. In addition this goal is attained by working with both the St. Charles Park District and Kane County Forest Preserve.

Recent projects include restoration of native prairie to Riverside Park, a park on the Fox River bike path. The project eliminated mowing and related emissions, and provides a wildlife habitat.

Environmental Education - Land

The Kane County Forest Preserve offers a variety of educational programs for adults and children on local wildlife, environmental education, local ecosystems, land use history, and local land formations.

The St. Charles Park District's Hickory Knolls Discovery Center is a 10,500 square foot, LEED-certified environmental education center that hosts a variety of environmental education programs by district naturalists and local experts as well as natural area restoration programs.
