St. Charles Police Department Again Receives National Accreditation

The Police Department has held CALEA Accreditation since 1989

For the ninth time, the St. Charles Police Department has been awarded National Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The Accreditation process includes completing a self-assessment to confirm the Department’s policies and procedures are in compliance with 482 recognized public safety standards, hosting an onsite assessment by Commission officials, and receiving public comments about the Department. The Accreditation is in effect for four years.

“I would like to thank everyone in the St. Charles Police Department for their hard work in completing yet another successful CALEA accreditation,” said Police Chief James Keegan. “I am proud that the professionalism and excellence of our Department has once again been recognized and awarded by independent third-party reviewers in the field of professional law enforcement accreditation.” 

Onsite Assessment

May 5-8, two Commission assessors were onsite to interview department personnel and city officials, and meet with community leaders. They also performed ride-alongs with officers and heard comments from the public in a special session.

During the exit interview, he assessors stated that there were no issues to cite – something they have only seen a handful of times in 20 years of reviewing public safety agencies. They also commented that the transparency of the department is very evident.

Accreditation Decision

A decision to by the Commission to grant accreditation is rendered by a governing body of 21 Commissioners, following a public hearing and a review of all supporting documentation. The award officially was presented Nov. 18 at the CALEA conference in Jacksonville, Fla.

Re-accreditation is for a period of four years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with the 482 standards.  The St. Charles Police Department first achieved its accredited status in 1989, when it became one of the first agencies in the State of Illinois to become Nationally Accredited.
